“The Gauntlet”

Kevin Koytk who has been a member of the Shilo Country Club for a few years presented to Scott Ramsay, Manager the idea of calling holes 7 thru 12, “The Gauntlet”. These holes have proven to be a real test to golfers in that they require long and accurate tee shots and precise distance control into the greens. There is trouble on both sides of the fairway on these holes, and the greens are hard to hit in regulation and can be quite undulating in spots. If you want a good round of golf you have to “survive” The Gauntlet. This idea has been approved by the Board of Directors and signage will be made up to be placed on the course.

Thank you Kevin for the great idea!

Course Updates from the Manager

Just a short note to fill everyone in on the various updates and renovations that have been taking place on the golf course. Tee boxes #1, #5 and #18 have been sodded and with a bit of luck, should be open for play as early as June 1st. We are waiting for a bit more grass to grow on the new #17 fairway and teebox, but we are optimistic that this area will be open for play by June 1st as well. We will have completed a tower down at the bottom near the teebox for golfers to check ahead on the fairway before playing away.

You will also notice that we have created new cart paths on #3, #5, and #14. In the past cart traffic has tended to wear down areas near to where we have cut these paths, so when required sod for our new teeboxes, we cut if from these areas, and essentially killed two birds with one stone. Bringing in sod from an outside source was found to be extremely expensive, but by using the sod that is native to this location, we are probably better off.

The area where the current cart path on #14 runs up the middle of the fairway will be soiled and sodded or seeded in the next little while.
The cart paths will be worked on over the next few weeks, and there are plans in the works to add a teebox on #8, renovate the current tee on #8, add a teebox on #2, behind the hydro pole that will hopefully get moved at some point, and renovate and slightly lengthen #10 tee. This work will be done in the fall, and hopefully finished early next year.

The Granite tee-signs on holes #6, #7, #11, and #16 have been moved. Big thanks to Gord Paziuk and Grand Valley Contracting for assisting the SCC with this endeavor. At some point in the next year, these signs will be updated. We do our best to keep these signs clean, and will continue to do so, but please understand that due to the high mineral content of the irrigation water, this can be quite a chore.

Also a big, huge thanks goes out to Ray Prange who is always helping out with the deadfall, trimming the hazards that are those caraganas, cart path creation and maintenance, raking and any other number of jobs that we would never get the time to do. Ray’s work is very much appreciated by everyone associated with the SCC.

There will continue to be a number of projects and renovations taking place on the course over the next number of years with the intent of keeping the golf course current. We will be working on the rest of the men’s and women’s tees as well as a couple of greens, and adding a number of bunkers, as long as we are able to stay within our very limited capital budget.

Have a great season!!
